Rubber Gutter Fails

This 3-tab organic shingle roof was leaking in the general field area. A trip into the attic gave us the exact location of the drip. I laid my wooden handle knife on the spot. As there were no "smoking guns" to speak of we knew we in for a search. The first priority was to clean the roof area of the moss. Moss is famous for deflecting and re-routing the natural flow of water on shingle roofs. The lower the slope the more likely the occurrence.
We found that there were several "dishes" in the profile of the roof where the water had the ability to flow sideways instead of up and down the roof. In addition the nails used during installation had been sunk too forcefully and many had blasted right through the shingle. That's what happens when using a nail gun and not having the pressure tuned properly. So if you combine lateral movement of water and weaknesses in the integrity of the shingles, you get a leak! Our challenge was to clean the roof area, by hand, and then caulk seal all nail "blow-throughs" in the general area of the drip.
Here we are just finishing the work. Another satisfied customer to add to our substantial list!
Customer: Aarti Investments Ltd.
Project Completed: February 2013
Type of Roof: Shingle
Materials: Roof patch clear caulking
Location: Vancouver, B.C.
This was an interesting problem. The water was actually travelling sideways (and entered the attic through the side butts of the individual shingles), rather than running down hill due to a slight deflection in the wooden deck under the shingles. The problem was compounded with a curling of the organic shingle due to the aging process, which resulted in a “dish” effect to the shingle. We got it all sorted out and look forward to the next adventure
