It wasn’t but a month ago that I wrote a blog about a failed copper spun drain and the leak it caused. Wouldn’t you know I had another today. We were in Vancouver doing repairs to an upper roof top deck area when the owner suggested I look at his lower small deck area for deficiencies that may be contributing to reported moisture issues in the ceiling below. I automatically head to protrusions and since there was only one – the drain – I concentrated on that. And there you have it. VIOLA. A nail head sized hole in the bowl area of the drain. Replacing the drain would have been the ultimate solution but since we were doing a bunch of work on the upper roof already, we chose a simpler and less costly alternative. I torched membrane down into the drain bowl and basically covered any visible copper with membrane. That should do him well.
